Chunky Handwoven Organic Basketweave Cotton
A chunky, basket weave cotton canvas in its undyed, natural, beige colour.
This fabric has a strong basket weave structure, characterised by multiple yarns used for the warp and weft. This means the fabric is exceptionally durable, with a great structure and hold. It's particularly suitable for heavier clothing such as jackets and trousers, accessories, and soft furnishings.
The fabric's colour is slightly speckled - a common trait in undyed, cotton textiles - with an irregular, almost darker-hue stripe across the weft. It is also ideal for natural dyeing and as a base for embroidery.

Ethical & sustainability considerations
The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn and the weaving of the fabric on power looms are all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton is cotton grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.
All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals; however, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing. The fabric itself is biodegradable under the right conditions.
To care for your product
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature, though likely won't need much.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 annually.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer, and if you dry flat, it will help prevent stretching in the weave. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher, or even steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Note it may shrink by around 3-5% in hot washes.
Ideal For Aprons, Bags & Accessories, Curtains & Pelmets, Embroidery, Hand Sewing, Jackets & Coats, Machine Sewing, Millinery, Napkins, Placemats, Soft Furnishings, Table Runner, Tea Cosy & Door Stops, Tops & Tunics, Toys, Upholstery
Please note
As this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric, woven using organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, there are likely to be minor irregularities in the weave, primarily as a slight slub or dark thread that has been pulled through the weft. As it is already a speckled fabric, it is unlikely to be visible, and we hope that you see this as part of the charm.
