Organic Lightweight Undyed Basketweave
Beautiful, lightweight cotton, handwoven in a fair trade accredited female-led co-operative. Available in 128cm or 150cm wide.
This lightweight white organic cotton fabric has a smooth, matte-textured surface. Basket weaves tend to have more texture than plain weaves due to the doubling of yarns woven in the weft. This material has a bit of structure, so it's more structured than a sateen and heavier than a poplin.
Fantastic for natural dyeing, printing, embroidery and painting. For clothing, it is ideal for summer tops, lined dresses, easy trousers and skirts, lined jackets or as a lining itself. It is also lovely for interiors, homewares, cushions, blinds and curtains, pillowcases and quilting.

Ethical and Sustainability Considerations
The spinning and weaving of the yarns and bleaching of the finished material is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified as a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.
All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production. However, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing (just eco bleaching). The material is biodegradable under the right conditions.

To Care for Your Product
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the hand-blocked natural dye for longer, we recommend hand washing any item you make with this textile. Iron med-hot temperature on the reverse to protect the print.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 annually.
We also recommend line drying, which reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher, or steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Due to the nature of handwoven and hand-printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric. However, there could be minor irregularities that we love and see as normal and charming.
